Week 1 Social Media Marketing

Welcome!

Lets start with a scenario shall we? You are scrolling through Facebook catching up with Mary that you haven't talked to in months since she moved to Frankfurt, Germany. You have been looking for flights to go out and visit her for spring break but the prices have been to high. While on Facebook you see an ad from the corner of your eye, flights to Frankfurt only $500 round trip and they're the dates that you need. Excited about this offer you click on it but once you've clicked on it, its not the same deal as advertised.

Have you ever wondered how your computer tracks what you search then adds it as an advertisement later? It's not only Facebook that is doing this but Google as well. Recently I've watched a Ted Talk on the ways that Facebook and Google only show you things and searches that they feel you would like based on your recent likes and searched.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6vM4dhI9I8. It goes on saying how two different people can search the same subject but end up with different results.

Is this helpful or hurtful? The algorithms that are used to make your life easier, filtering out the things that you don't necessarily like but at the same time are narrowing your vising towards your surroundings. By filtering the topics that you do not agree with it limits your ability fact check someone from the opposite side of an argument. Facebook is essentially paid for by advertisers so by adding advertisements on the side of your Facebook page linked to the things that you've recently searched or liked is a strategic marketing technique to draw people in.
